Cartoon Sunday: Horror References In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure And The Roots Of Dio's Wickedness

How's it going lurkers? So, did you enjoy the ominous tones of Hayato Matsuo's compositions for Song Saturday? I enjoyed "Giwaku," which is "Suspicion" in Japanese. When it comes to horror, it definitely gave me creepy vibes.

After listening to "Suspicion," I imagined JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's super villain, DIO, Phantom Of The Opera, and ABC's 1966 Gothic Horror Soap Opera, Dark Shadows.

I don't know much about reading or playing musical instruments. Therefore, I won't pretend to know what exact notes were played in the preceding music scores.

You see, I got the short end of the stick; Everyone in my immediate family can play at least 1 musical instrument, whereas I only sang in choir for graduation requirements, during my youth.

Anyway, those low piano notes for Hayato Matsuo's "Suspicion" were as bone-chilling as watching Classic Horror Movie trailers from 3-4 decades ago.
During Matsuo's score, I could actually feel my blood running cold. This is coming from someone, who is a mostly desensitized Horror fan.

Speaking of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise and the Horror genre, I recently questioned some fans about the continuation of Stardust Crusaders.

Those, who have read my blogs and have been subscribed to me over the last 5 years, should recall the 3 Cartoon Sunday blogs I published, last year.

In the following blogs, I explained about the music references featured in Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency, and Stardust Crusaders.

Cartoon Sunday: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood + Battle Tendency Music References

Cartoon Sunday: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Recap With Stardust Crusaders Music References

Cartoon Sunday: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders + Stands

According to some JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fans from AnimeNation, Hirohiko Araki was influenced by Bram Stoker's Dracula, while creating Phantom Blood. There is horror throughout this franchise. However, there is supposed to be more horror in the "Battle In Egypt" Arc for Stardust Crusaders.

Last year, Stardust Crusaders premiered on Adult Swim's Toonami block. Even though there is horror throughout the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, catching all the horror references can be difficult.

There are so many music references, that they eclipse the horror references. Over the last several months or so, I managed to notice a few Stephen King references.

For example, Stardust Crusaders places a major emphasis on stands and stand users. Horror novelist, Stephen King published a Post-Apocalyptic Horror Fantasy novel titled, The Stand in 1978.

By 1994, ABC broadcasted the miniseries of the same name for viewers.

Jotaro's last name is most likely another King reference. Have you noticed, that Jotaro's last name is "Kujo"?

Because the character is Japanese, his last name is bound to be spelled differently in Japanese than the rabid dog's name in Stephen King's Psychological Horror novel, Cujo.

Also, did you happen to notice the red Plymouth Fury? You know that red, possessed car? In Stardust Crusaders, it is known as The Wheel Of Fortune Stand. That same stand somewhat resembles the red car in Stephen King's Christine.

Meanwhile, the stand, Yellow Temperance resembles The Blob from the 1958 Sci-Fi Horror film.

A few episodes before the "Battle In Egypt" Arc, a baby with fangs known as Mannish Boy, uses his stand, Death 13. Death 13 appears in Kakyoin and Polnareff's dreams.

Much like Freddy Krueger from Wes Craven's 1984 Slasher Horror film, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Mannish Boy tries killing them in the dreamworld.

With all this talk about horror, let's NOT  forget about the super villain Dio Brando, who is now known as simply "DIO."

If you look back at JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood, it was already shown from the very beginning how incredibly evil and cunning Dio Brando was as a character.

Some may justify, that it was all because his father, Dario Brando, was an abusive drunk, who forced Dio into becoming a lying, power hungry, con artist.

It took for Dio to commit patricide (basically kill his own father), Dario to be free of him by poisoning Dario to death. Dio used that same poison to kill Jonathan Joestar's father, George.

Since the time Dio Brando poisoned his own father, he was overtaken by that ancient, South American stone mask.

Once blood flew on it, during Dio's soap opera brawl with Jonathan, the stone mask was activated. The ancient South American stone mask transforms the person, who wears it into a vampire.

After Dio Brando obtained the stone mask, he became not only a lying, power hungry serial killer, but also a man-whoring vampire.

With the resurgence of Dio in Stardust Crusaders, it is only fitting to return to the roots of his wickedness.

For today's Cartoon Sunday, lets take a look back at the root's of Dio Brando's wickedness in Phantom Blood.

Song Saturday: Hayato Matsuo's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Scores

How's it going lurkers? Are you getting pumped for tonight? I know I am; I can't wait!

Since last summer, I have wondered, if Adult Swim's Toonami block would premiere the "Battle In Egypt" Arc shortly after the first 24 episodes of Stardust Crusaders, or if the series would go on hiatus for more dubbing.

As of last Saturday's Toonami Promo, it appears that Toonami will be premiering the "Battle In Egypt" Arc TONIGHT.

[Toonami Promo] JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders "Battle in Egypt" Arc (2018)
You have no idea how happy and relieved I am, right now. This means we as viewers will not have to endure any speed bumps.

When saying "speed bumps," I mean interrupting the continuation of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders only to be preempted for another 1/2 year.

Basically, that is like the local news interrupting already scheduled programming for supposed "late breaking news." Throughout this Seinen Supernatural Horror Action Anime, there have been horror and horror references in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

I was recently informed, that Parts 3 (Stardust Crusaders) and 4 (Diamond Is Unbreakable) have more horror and horror references in them.

According to what I have read and heard from other JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fans, there is more horror in Stardust Crusaders. This is probably due to the resurgence of the sinister Dio Brando.

Dio Brando is that super villain in a series, that readers and viewers LOVE to hate. You wish he would die. If he does die, it seems too good to be true. Dio is just THAT  kind of an evil character.

Dio Brando is such a sinister character, I will even go as far as saying, that if Dio was ever someone on a forum, he would be the worst kind of troll online.

Imagine a troll, that runs cons, lies, backstabs, smears online reputations, violates posters and their privacy, sends harassing e-mail messages, sends moles and flunkies to cyber stalk, profile, slander, witch hunt, and gossip about innocent posters, spams the forum with dozens of malicious call out threads about certain posters, and turns an entire community against those posters.

Not that the fictional super villain ever committed such atrocities listed above, but imagine if he really DID commit such cyber crimes as a troll.

The super villain, Dio Brando is a highly resentful, narcissistic sociopath and classist with a great sense of entitlement, huge chips on his shoulders, and suffers from Little Dick Syndrome.

When I say, "Little Dick Syndrome," I mean abuse of power.

Dio is a very powerful villain from the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise and revels in abusing his power. Believe it or not, there are people as sinister and as deplorable as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's Dio Brando, that really exist. Dio Brando, who is now known as "DIO," is back for the "Battle In Egypt" Arc.

Whenever JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's music changes to an ominous score during scenes, there is usually a great chance that DIO is coming. He is no longer a human and hasn't been for centuries. This super villain is not only a serial killer, but also a VAMPIRE.

Mangaka, Hirohiko Araki was influenced by Bram Stoker's Dracula, when creating JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood.

Dio Brando seeks to destroy the Joestar Clan. His vendetta with Jonathan Joestar dates back to 1880 from England.

Being extremely opportunistic, cunning, and power hungry have to be Dio Brando's WORST  flaws. As a viewer of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, I believe Dio's extreme lust for power is his worst flaw.

To most people, money equals power. More than anything, Dio Brando always resented Jonathan Joestar for his wealthy status and has spent over a century destroying people's lives for power, including Jonathan's.

Before the late 1930's, Dio Brando killed Jonathan Joestar. Then, Dio took over his body. With this current season airing on Adult Swim's Toonami block, the characters of Stardust Crusaders are in Egypt, during the late 1980's. They are trying to save Jotaru Kujo's sick mother, Holly.

With the resurgence of the super villain, DIO, we can expect to hear more ominous music between scenes. Hayato Matsuo composed the music for the first 9 episodes of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood.

As said earlier, whenever the songs have ominous tones during certain scenes, viewers can expect for Dio Brando to make an appearance. Here are 3 creepy scores by composer, Hayato Matsuo, to set the ominous tones of Dio Brando's arrival for today's Song Saturday.

1) Hayato Matsuo "Yami No Fuchi Yori" {"From The Edge Of Darkness} JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood Anime Score (2012)
2) Hayato Matsuo "Himeru Omoi" {"Be Sore"} JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood Anime Score (2012)

3) Hayato Matsuo "Giwaku" {"Suspicion"} JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood Anime Score (2012)

Song Saturday: Yes' Roundabout

How's it going lurkers? I have some exciting news, in regards to Adult Swim's Toonami block. Yes, I know today's NOT Cartoon Sunday.

In fact, I am sharing this news for all those, who watch the block. There appears to be a schedule change as of TONIGHT. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders and Tokyo Ghoul have been moved up.

Toonami Regains Half Hour of Programming

It would be nice if Naruto Shippuden was airing at the start of the Toonami block, but I can live with its new timeslot. I believe that The Toonami  Team actually took what I said, earlier this month into consideration on Facebook.

On the official Facebook page for Toonami, I told them that in order for more viewers to have a better chance of watching JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders and Tokyo Ghoul, both shows should be airing at earlier times. Then, both of their viewer ratings would be higher.

We all know how NEUROTIC Toonami zealots can be over cartoon ratings that were already RIGGED.

Regardless, I am so excited to see Stardust Crusaders! Hopefully, Toonami plays The Bangles' "Walk Like An Egyptian." It is the ending theme song for Stardust Crusaders, after all.

On April 29th, I published a Song Saturday blog, featuring the band's music video. TALK ABOUT THE SO-CALLED FEELS!!!

Over 3 decades later, I still have The Bangles' album, Different Light on vinyl.

My mother bought their 2nd album for me, when I was a preschooler. What can I say? Cartoons and music videos were a major part of my childhood, during the 1980's.

Now that I think about it, not too much has changed as an adult. I suppose some can say, that "old habits die hard."

Meanwhile, the ending theme song for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency was a song I never heard in all my life. That was until last year.

When I heard Yes' "Roundabout" as the ending theme song for Phantom Blood AND Battle Tendency, it reminded me of the 1970's Disco group, Earth, Wind & Fire. Because Yes was a Progressive Rock band from the '70s, Jazz, Funk, Latin, and Disco can be heard in their song, "Roundabout."

This song from their 4th album, Fragile released in 1971. That was 11 years before I was born.

Considering that I listen to some songs, which happen to be YEARS before my time, it is surprising that I have never heard "Roundabout" on radio stations.

Yes released their song, "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" 1 year after I was born. I have known about that song for the last 3 decades and still love it until this very day.

Speaking of "Owner Of A Lonely Heart," a quick sample of the song was featured in an episode of Battle Tendency.

The song quickly played, when Joseph Joestar was in the middle of doing his Hamon training with Lisa-Lisa and Caesar Zeppeli, last season.

Since today's Song Saturday blog is mostly about the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, here is its original ending theme song by Yes.

Song Saturday: The Bangles' Walk Like An Egyptian

How's it going lurkers? Aside from a few complainers last Song Saturday, I am really glad that more of you enjoyed all the songs written and co-written by Prince and learned something new.

Here it is 1 year later and I am STILL reeling over the fact, that Prince wrote "Manic Monday," which he eventually gave to The Bangles.

After re-listening to the lyrics for "Manic Monday," I began to realize that it DOES sound like a Prince song. There is no need to worry. This is NOT another Prince Tribute blog.

Because some felt the need to COMPLAIN about the latest Prince Tribute blog from last Saturday, they will probably complain again today mostly for the sake of complaining and because this song won't necessarily be from their favorite genre of music.

To ease the minds of some, I will try sharing some new Rock Music, next Saturday.

Speaking of The Bangles, they used to be 1 of my favorite Pop-Rock bands growing up in the 1980's. They are famous for songs such as "Manic Monday" and "Walk Like An Egyptian."

Could you imagine if "Walk Like An Egyptian" released today?

Considering how "politically correct" everybody and everything must be in this era of crybabies, people would probably be outraged around social media and have a heart attack over the song being "racist" and "politically incorrect."

I loved "Walk Like An Egyptian" growing up. During the mid to late '80s, the music video was in heavy rotation on MTV. Over 30 years later, the song is still being played on traditional radio stations.

The song and music video for "Walk Like An Egyptian" were so popular, that many people did the silly so-called, "Egyptian" dance moves. NOBODY COMPLAINED about it either! We simply had fun.

It's such a shame that we can't go back to a time like the '80s. More people learned how to enjoy and appreciate entertainment as oppose to being hypersensitive and wanting to be a political activist, that browbeats everyone with political correctness.

Amazingly, The Bangles' song, "Walk Like An Egyptian" is still very popular today and in Japan. In fact, this song is so popular it was used as the ending theme for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's 2nd season, Stardust Crusaders.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders Ending Theme Song (2014)

After discovering that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure used "Walk Like An Egyptian" as the 2nd season's ending theme song, I was stunned. Then again, it makes sense. Given my hectic schedule on AND offline, I have yet to watch Stardust Crusaders.

Hopefully after Adult Swim's Toonami block finishes premiering Attack On Titan, we the viewers will have a chance to watch Stardust Crusaders.

I am especially curious to know, if Viz Media gained the rights to use "Walk Like An Egyptian" as the ending theme song for the English Dub of Part 3: Stardust Crusaders.

Since the 2nd season of this Seinen Supernatural Action Anime takes place during the late 1980's, contains '80s pop-culture music references, and has 9 Egyptian gods as characters, "Walk Like An Egyptian" seems appropriate for the ending theme song.

Even though I have yet to watch the 2nd season, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, I watched another music reference video about the next set of characters. Tomorrow I will have a preview of the next set of characters for Stardust Crusaders.

Judging by the looks of this next season, it has more characters than both Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency combined. Anyway, here is The Bangles' music video for the song, "Walk Like An Egyptian."

Cartoon Sunday: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood & Battle Tendency Music References

{This Cartoon Sunday blog was previously published in 2017. As of 2021, videos containing the following music references have recently been updated.}

How's it going lurkers? It appears that more musicians from the 1980's were name dropped in last night's episode of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency.

Lately, more musicians from the '80s are being referenced to in Part 2 of this series. Hirohiko Araki's characters are named after many groups (mostly Rock bands) and singers in general.

It has been about several months, since I last mentioned the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise.

Recently, I learned that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is considered to be a "multi-generational" franchise and the first 2 parts of the franchise are combined into Season 1.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood was only Part 1 of the franchise. It had a Dark Shadows, Gothic Horror Soap Opera tone and was set during the 19th Century in England, when the ORIGINAL protagonist (Jonathan Joestar) was learning how to use Hamon.

Hamon is supposedly a form of Martial Arts, which uses the sun's energy.

Will A. Zeppeli taught Jonathan how to use Hamon to fight his sinister, adopted brother, Dio Brando and Dio's minions of vampires. Part 2 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is Battle Tendency.

Now that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency premieres on Adult Swim's Toonami block, the franchise takes place, during the 1930's with Jonathan Joestar's grandson, Joseph Joestar (in the picture above) in America. Lately, there have been a lot of 1980's singers being named dropped.

Last week, the character "Lisa Lisa" was introduced. There was also a song sample of Yes' "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" being used, when Joseph was doing Hamon training.

In Battle Tendency, Joseph Joestar trains to defeat The Pillar Men. The Pillar Men are members of an ancient vampiric race. Last night, he managed to defeat Esidisi. Esidisi is named after the Hard Rock band, AC/DC.

Even though the illustrations of these characters look like dated characters from the 1980's, watching JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is quite an entertaining franchise for a Seinen Supernatural Thriller Action Anime.

Then again, Hirohiko Araki created his Manga during the 1980's, which explains why some of his characters are named after Lisa Lisa, Wham!, REO Speedwagon, Dire Straits, The Cars, etc.

The characters being namesakes of celebrities, songs, albums, etc. add to the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise's campiness. Whenever watching this particular series, I usually laugh because they are namesakes.

Rather than sharing the usual animation, I thought it would be better to learn more about the names of the characters from the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise for Cartoon Sunday.

Cartoon Sunday: Tokyo Ghoul

How's it going lurkers? As I predicted, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood will be premiering this month on October 15th. It will be One Punch Man's replacement, which I'm glad. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure gives me another show to watch on Saturday nights.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood Promo On Toonami (2016)

Meanwhile, the Toonami block just finished re-airing the final 3 episodes of Parasyte -The Maxim- for the very last time. While posting last week on Adult Swim, I learned that Adult Swim no longer has the rights to re-air Parasyte because their broadcasting rights expired.

I STILL say that Tokyo Ghoul would be the perfect replacement for Parasyte -The Maxim-. Both are Seinen Horror Action Anime. You all know that I have mentioned Tokyo Ghoul at least several times on here.

Since last August, I have STRUGGLED to find an English Dub episode of Tokyo Ghoul. Considering that today's topic is about Tokyo Ghoul, I will explain about this Seinen Horror Action Anime, once again.

Last August, I published a Cartoon Sunday blog featuring its trailer. Although, it doesn't hurt to revisit the synopsis.

According to Anime News Network, Tokyo Ghoul is about a college student named Ken Kaneki. Kaneki meets a girl his age, named Rize Kamishiro (featured in the above picture for today) at a cafe, which he frequents and quickly bonds with her. Ken Kaneki doesn't know, that Rize is a ghoul.

Hunting and devouring human flesh is how Rize survives. After The Red Child (Rize's special organ) is transplanted into Kaneki's body, he becomes a ghoul and is trapped in a warped world where humans are not at the top of the food chain.

As a quick reminder, you will need to click on the link below, in order to be directed to Funimation. Because Tokyo Ghoul is meant for ADULTS, you must sign in or join to watch this series. Anyway, here is Tokyo Ghoul for today's Cartoon Sunday.

Cartoon Sunday: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Phantom Blood Review

How's it going lurkers? You may recall from last Sunday, I mentioned that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood will be premiering on Adult Swim's Toonami block this October.

Judging by only watching Season 1: Episode 1 on my own last week, it really doesn't seem like too bad of a series. If anything, I'm quite surprised that JASON DEMARCO, who is running the Toonami block, took such a risk.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is not the stereotypical Shonen Jump Action Anime, that would be aired on either Cartoon Network, or Adult Swim. This is a series that I would've expected to have been aired on Chiller TV, Syfy, IFC, or another cable or satellite channel.

So far, the only real complaint I have about the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise would be, that the illustrations of the characters look somewhat dated for a 2012 Anime. This Manga franchise debuted in 1987, which could POSSIBLY explain why the characters look like something from the Speed Racer Manga circa 1966. However, the Anime illustrations for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure look MORE modern compared to the Manga illustrations.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Complete Manga Set Vol. 1 (Parts 1-5)

Last weekend, I YouTubed vlogs, which gave summaries about the franchise. This was BEFORE watching episode 1 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood.

As I watched Lore In A Minute's animated summary for a better understanding about the characters, it made me laugh.

Lore In A Minute: "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Phantom Blood" Animated Summary (2016)

So, you are probably wondering what genre(s)/sub-genre(s) is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood?

Even though I have only watched Phantom Blood Episode 1, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is considered a Horror, Thriller, and Supernatural Action Adventure Anime.

This series is obviously meant for the male audience, since its target demographic is between Shonen (boys) and Seinen (men).

I don't know as much about JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, but I WILL say that only reading summaries about the franchise, both the Anime and Manga are really complex. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has 8 parts to it in regards to the Manga. This is not including the novel, OVA's, or Anime.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Season 1 only explains the first 2 parts of the series, which include both Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency.

We still have yet to be given the exact date in October for its Toonami premiere. All we know is that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is premiering in 2 more months.

Speaking of the first 2 parts of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Season 1 begins with the Phantom Blood Arc, which is set in England 1868. Dario Brando, who is a thief, tries raiding an overturned carriage.

To give a better explanation about episode 1 (since the link for today is English Subtitled), Dario then changes his mind after learning a father (George Joestar) and son (Jonathan Joestar) are still alive.

Rather than raiding the overturned carriage, he rescues them. About 12 years later, Jonathan sets out to become a "gentleman" after becoming of age. This includes fighting for a "woman's honor" (Erina Pendleton).

At the same time, Dario is on his deathbed and forces his son (Dio) to move in with Jonathan and his family, in order to fulfill George Joestar's life debt. Dio obeys his father prepared with his OWN hidden agendas.

In other words, Dio Brando moves in with The Joestar Family and social climbs his way to the top, in order to become the next heir to The Joestars.

Dio goes as far as sadistically upstaging Jonathan in performing his "gentlemanly" duties. To bruise Jonathan's ego, Dio becomes a more skillful boxer than him. Making matters worse, Dio SLANDERS Jonathan by spreading lies about him to all of Jonathan's friends.

Adding more insult to injury, Dio stoops as low as poaching Jonathan's childhood love by forcing Erina to kiss him; He steals Erina's first kiss from Jonathan, making her feel extremely violated (as if she had been raped). When Jonathan learns of the news, he flies into a fit of rage. After being punched, Dio's blood is spilled on an ancient Stone Mask. It starts to react.

Suddenly, George has to interrupt the brawl between Jonathan and Dio. Just when we all thought the situation could NOT get any worse, it DOES!

Watching JoJo's Bizarre Adventure feels more like a Japanese animated soap opera. It will NOT surprise me, if a J-Drama will soon be in the works.

Not only do I sympathize, but also empathize with Jonathan. Coping with slander really hits close to home for me, especially when it comes to double standards for glorified, lowlife men.

Today's blog has been quite a lengthy review. I hope did not spoil too much for everyone. There is still more that I haven't mentioned for Phantom Blood Episode 1. I tried locating a decent English Dub of this particular episode on YouTube but had no such luck.

Luckily for me, I have watched Episode 1 on another online streaming site dubbed and the characters have British accents. It is probably much better for you to watch JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood in Japanese, before it premieres on Adult Swim's Toonami block in October.

With that being said, here is Phantom Blood Season 1: Episode 1 for today's Cartoon Sunday.
